On a crisp autumn evening in 1980, seven-year-old Grant Moreton and his five-year-old sister Paige were nearly killed in a mysterious accident in the Cascade Mountains that left them orphans.

It’s been thirty years since that night. Grant is now a detective with the Seattle Police Department and long estranged from his sister. But his investigation into the bloody past of a high-class prostitute has led right to Paige’s door, and what awaits inside is beyond his wildest imagining.

His only hope of survival and saving his sister will be to confront the terror that inhabits its walls, but he is completely unprepared to face the truth of what haunts his sister’s brownstone.

Terrorists plan to attack Minnesota’s Prairie River Nuclear Power Plant, but they’re not your typical band of Islamic extremists. True, there’s an al Qaeda connection. But the heart of the ‘terror cell’ is homegrown, right here in the United States.

James “Beck” Becker is a former elite U.S. government intelligence operative who has retired to his childhood hometown of Red Wing, Minnesota – just six miles down the Mississippi from the Prairie River Power Station. He recognizes connections between seemingly unrelated incidents – a murdered agronomy professor, a missing lab assistant, an international cell call, a stolen fertilizer truck, an explosion in the street in front of City Hall – but can’t piece it together in enough detail to convince government authorities that a larger threat exists. Only his American Indian friend, “Bull,” will help Beck defuse the threat.

So it’s Beck and Bull versus the best terror cell west of the Mississippi. May the better men win.

As 1879 draws to a close, this Rocky Mountain boomtown has infected the world with silver fever. Joe Rose, a precious-metals assayer, was found trampled into the muck behind Inez Stannert’s saloon. A lady educated on the East Coast, Inez has a past that doesn’t bear close scrutiny, including her elopement with a gambling man who has recently disappeared.

Most townsfolk, including Inez’s business partner, Abe Jackson, dismiss Joe’s death as an accident. But Inez wonders: Why was this loving husband and father carrying a brass token good for “one free screw” at the parlor house of Denver madam Mattie Silks?

When Joe’s widow Emma asks Inez to settle Joe’s affairs, almost against her will, Inez uncovers skewed assays, bogus greenbacks, and blackmail.
